Osteofitness with Beverley Ikier and Kerri Powers
Instructors: Beverley Ikier, certified with the National Council of Strength and Fitness, Board Certified Muscular Therapist, member of Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation, and creator of OsteofitnessTM. Kerri Powers is a ACE Certified Personal Trainer, LifeStyle Management Nutrition Specialist, and the owner of Fitness Together in Lexington, Ma.
Description: Evidence shows that treatment for osteoporosis is multifaceted, involving not only strength training, but nutrition and lifestyle changes, too. OsteofitnessTM combines strength training, stretching, balance and proprioceptive training, and fall-prevention techniques to create a comprehensive program geared at building new bone. This program targets the common osteoporotic sites including the total hip, total spine, lumbar spine, neck of the femur, and wrists. Health education on how to live with osteoporosis, bone-health nutrition, and stress-management skills are taught as part of each class. Members have seen improvement in their bone scan T-scores after participating in the OsteofitnessTM program!
OsteofitnessTM Perks: Members received one free half-hour consultation, and email coaching throughout the session with Beverley Ikier. This is aimed at making a personalized plan to treat your osteoporosis. The OsteofitnessTM Newsletter discusses important topics pertaining to osteoporosis, general health, stress management, bone-health nutrition, strengthening for osteoporosis, along with interest and travel pieces. The Bites with Bev recipes, include both carne (meat-based) and vegetarian recipes designed with bone-health nutrition in-mind. Both are sent to members each month as part of the program. Two floating videos are included in the program: A pre-recorded OsteofitnessTM and a new Self-Care class. Both videos are available to watch at your convenience for the duration of the session.
Equipment needed: "Beverley" ball (which is a 35cm inflatable, bouncy ball), hand weights, an exercise mat (not a yoga mat), and ankle weights.
