Adolescent Substance Use: Trends, Prevention Strategies, and Treatment

Dr. Jessie Calihan is a pediatrician, internist, and health services researcher in the Department of Pediatrics at Mass General Brigham for Children, where she cares for adolescents with concerning substance use. She attended medical school at Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons before completing the Urban Health Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital and fellowships in pediatric addiction medicine and adolescent medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital. Her research focuses on engaging parents in family-focused strategies to prevent intergenerational substance use. 

Objectives: 
  • Review national and local trends in adolescent substance use. 
  • Discuss opportunities to prevent adolescent substance use and encourage positive alternatives. 
  • Present treatment options, including behavioral interventions, medications, harm reduction, and local resources.
