Let's Walk with Theresa Scannell - Let's Walk - Fall As early as eight months, we humans take the first steps to independence. Fall, get up. Wobble, get steady. Hold onto a table. LET GO!!!! What we didn't realize then, we recognize now: walking matters. Every Tuesday, we will meet at the Center Track, review one technique associated with walking, and then we will walk! Whether for fitness, connection, solitude, motivation, enjoyment or an interest in developing a safe walking program, this class is for you! Walk at your own pace, no pressure. If you can walk 20-30 minutes non-stop and have a good sense of humor, lace up your sneakers and come join instructor Theresa Scannell. Let's Walk is an adjunct to the Forever Fit Program, supported by a grant from the Dana Home Foundation. This session is funded by the Massachusetts Council on Aging due to Lexington's extraordinary participation in the MassWalk Challenge in 2023.

Beginner/Intermediate: Chess is a fun and strategic game that can improve decision-making, strategic thinking, analytical skills, and more. We will learn the names of pieces, how they move, basic tactics, openings, checkmates, and endgames. Classes include 30-40 minutes of instruction with 20-30 minutes of supervised play.Intermediate/Advanced: Kids who are active players in tournaments or who are willing to participate in tournaments can sign up for this class. This is a semi competitive class and the class will be taught with more intermediate and advanced strategies and focus on tournament playing skills. We will also do a lot of puzzles and write notations so please bring a pencil and a score book if you have one.

Beginner/Intermediate: Chess is a fun and strategic game that can improve decision-making, strategic thinking, analytical skills, and more. We will learn the names of pieces, how they move, basic tactics, openings, checkmates, and endgames. Classes include 30-40 minutes of instruction with 20-30 minutes of supervised play.Intermediate/Advanced: Kids who are active players in tournaments or who are willing to participate in tournaments can sign up for this class. This is a semi competitive class and the class will be taught with more intermediate and advanced strategies and focus on tournament playing skills. We will also do a lot of puzzles and write notations so please bring a pencil and a score book if you have one.

Active Agers with Carolyn Gregoire - Winter Hybrid - Active Agers Winter Mini In this class we will have fun while increasing our strength, bone health, balance, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness. While listening to music, we will combine elements of muscle conditioning, functional movement for everyday activities, and intervals of cardio along with Yoga and Pilates postures. Correct form is stressed, and there is a focus on activating the proper muscles for each exercise. We will be doing some exercises standing and some while on the floor, and will incorporate weights and other forms of resistance. The end of each class will include stretching and relaxation. Carolyn has been a group fitness instructor for 20 years and a Personal trainer for over 12 years. You may recognize her from the Boston Sports Club in Lexington.

As heroes, you have been hired to find the courier and uncover the mystery surrounding the nearby wooded plateau called the Giant’s Table. Over the course of ten sessions, we'll learn the rules of the game and play through the entire adventure as a team. Players will select from an assortment of pre-generated characters so we can jump right in and start playing. Designed for all who are new to D&D, though kids with past experience are also welcome.Fall:(NEW) Land of Ithreach: Dungeons & DragonsRoll ModelsGo on an adventure set in the land of Ithreach, a fantasy settingwhere the seasons change and the story grows. Community Workshops with MGH Physical Therapists - The Importance of Ongoing Therapeutic Exercise After Stroke Register below for any of these community workshops by physical therapists from Massachusetts General Hospital, in partnership with Cary Memorial Library:The Importance of Ongoing Therapeutic Exercise After StrokeFriday, December 6, 1:00 - 2:00 pmExercise is an important part of the recovery process when one has experienced a stroke. This talk will focus on what the research says about why exercise is important and what kinds of exercise are beneficial to improve one's day to day function. The talk will be given by Sarah Bell and Kelly Hussey, who have been outpatient physical therapists at MGH for over 15 years, now working as senior PTs at MGH-West in Waltham. They both obtained their certification in Neurologic Physical Therapy by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) in 2015. The patient population they work with includes people with stroke and other acquired brain injuries, as well as those with any neurologic or balance-related conditions. This program is in partnership with Cary Memorial Library and Supportive Life Inc., a non-profit health care organization.

Transit Explorers - Transit Explorers - December 2024 The Transit Explorer series will help youth in 6th-12th grade learn how to get around via Lexpress and our local MBTA buses. Learning how to ride transit can increase access and independence! These transportation services can help you get to/from a range of activities such as school, after-school programs, summer programs, part-time jobs, volunteering, recreation and more! The class begins with a thorough warm-up for both the joints and the muscles. The warm-up is followed by strength training for all the major muscle groups of the body using hand weights (or household objects) and body weight, as well as a few minutes of standing balance exercises for those who are able. She has developed a program that can be performed at any fitness level and modified as needed.Powers is the owner of Fitness Together in Lexington, Massachusetts and brings years education and experience, along with providing detailed instruction for every exercise.Description: OsteofitnessTM is a natural approach to the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. This program is specifically designed to build bone density, and prevent fall and fracture. The recovery rate of an osteoporotic fracture is poor, ranging from needing assistance with ambulation, needing assistance with the tasks of daily living, to a 30 percent mortality rate. Thus, it is essential to take steps to prevent osteoporotic fractures.OsteofitnessTM has proven to be successful in improving bone mineral density (BMD) in osteopenia and osteoporosis, along with preparing seniors to strengthen, and maintain independent and active lifestyles. Active Agers with Carolyn Gregoire - Winter Hybrid - Active Agers Winter Mini In this class we will have fun while increasing our strength, bone health, balance, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness. While listening to music, we will combine elements of muscle conditioning, functional movement for everyday activities, and intervals of cardio along with Yoga and Pilates postures. Correct form is stressed, and there is a focus on activating the proper muscles for each exercise. We will be doing some exercises standing and some while on the floor, and will incorporate weights and other forms of resistance. The end of each class will include stretching and relaxation. This program is specifically designed to build bone density, and prevent fall and fracture. The recovery rate of an osteoporotic fracture is poor, ranging from needing assistance with ambulation, needing assistance with the tasks of daily living, to a 30 percent mortality rate. Thus, it is essential to take steps to prevent osteoporotic fractures.OsteofitnessTM has proven to be successful in improving bone mineral density (BMD) in osteopenia and osteoporosis, along with preparing seniors to strengthen, and maintain independent and active lifestyles. Chess Classes - Beginner/Intermediate, or Intermediate/Advanced - Intermediate Chess - Late Fall Both Classes: The first class will be used to evaluate the skill level in the class and a customized curriculum will be made to best suite the children in the class. Beginner/Intermediate: Chess is a fun and strategic game that can improve decision-making, strategic thinking, analytical skills, and more. We will learn the names of pieces, how they move, basic tactics, openings, checkmates, and endgames. Classes include 30-40 minutes of instruction with 20-30 minutes of supervised play.Intermediate/Advanced: Kids who are active players in tournaments or who are willing to participate in tournaments can sign up for this class. This is a semi competitive class and the class will be taught with more intermediate and advanced strategies and focus on tournament playing skills. We will also do a lot of puzzles and write notations so please bring a pencil and a score book if you have one.

Cardio-dance with Joanna is a dynamic combination of jazz, salsa, merengue, stretching, hip-hop and modern dance styles designed to give you an exhilarating, high intensity workout. Osteofitness with Beverley Ikier and Kerri Powers - Osteofitness Winter Mini Instructors: OsteofitnessTM is led by two certified and experienced instructors, Ikier and Kerri Powers. Ikier trained with Miriam Nelson and has been teaching this class for twenty years. Ikier is a CPT and BCTMB. She has developed a program that can be performed at any fitness level and modified as needed.Powers is the owner of Fitness Together in Lexington, Massachusetts and brings years education and experience, along with providing detailed instruction for every exercise.Description: OsteofitnessTM is a natural approach to the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. This program is specifically designed to build bone density, and prevent fall and fracture. The recovery rate of an osteoporotic fracture is poor, ranging from needing assistance with ambulation, needing assistance with the tasks of daily living, to a 30 percent mortality rate. Thus, it is essential to take steps to prevent osteoporotic fractures.OsteofitnessTM has proven to be successful in improving bone mineral density (BMD) in osteopenia and osteoporosis, along with preparing seniors to strengthen, and maintain independent and active lifestyles. This holistic approach to osteoporosis treatment includes, specific topics such as targeted strengthening to major osteoporotic sites, instruction for bone health, balance and posture, osteoporosis education, bone-health nutrition, stress management, and personalized instruction from Beverley Ikier.Chronic stress has been shown to inhibit bone growth. Easy-to-follow and feel-good routines to international beats. Each routine starts out with basic steps and adds on to each step as the song progresses. This creates the opportunity to add more intensity or lower the intensity level based on each individual's fitness abilities and preferences. Zumba Gold classes focus on building strength, cardiovascular health, balance, coordination, and flexibility. Please wear sturdy sneakers and bring water. Active Agers with Carolyn Gregoire - Winter Hybrid - Active Agers Winter Mini In this class we will have fun while increasing our strength, bone health, balance, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness. While listening to music, we will combine elements of muscle conditioning, functional movement for everyday activities, and intervals of cardio along with Yoga and Pilates postures. Correct form is stressed, and there is a focus on activating the proper muscles for each exercise. We will be doing some exercises standing and some while on the floor, and will incorporate weights and other forms of resistance. The end of each class will include stretching and relaxation. Carolyn has been a group fitness instructor for 20 years and a Personal trainer for over 12 years. You may recognize her from the Boston Sports Club in Lexington.

Seated Strength & Balance with Pearl Pressman - Seated Strength & Balance - Winter Mini (5 classes) This seated class is designed to accommodate individuals of various fitness levels and abilities and can be adapted to meet the particular needs of any of the participants. The class begins with a thorough warm-up for both the joints and the muscles. The warm-up is followed by strength training for all the major muscle groups of the body using hand weights (or household objects) and body weight, as well as a few minutes of standing balance exercises for those who are able. The class concludes with gentle stretching exercises to increase flexibility and reduce muscle tension. Instructor: Pearl Pressman conducted in person with option to zoom.

Strength Training with Pearl Pressman - Strength Training - Winter Mini (5 classes) This 55-minute class will help you build a stronger, more sculpted body, improve posture and balance and reduce the risk of osteoporosis. You will also learn proper weight-training techniques, which is key to success. The class begins with a brief warm-up, followed by strength training exercises for all the major muscle groups of the body, both standing, seated and on the floor, and concludes with gentle stretching exercises to increase flexibility and reduce muscle tension.
